In January 2015, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (formerly known as Citizenship and Immigration Canada) launched a new electronic system called Express Entry to manage applications for permanent residence in certain economic categories. According to the federal government, Canada needs high levels of immigration to meet current and future labor market needs, which will ensure our economic growth and long-term prosperity.

Express Entry allows Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to actively recruit, assess and select skilled immigrants under the following federal economic immigration categories:

• The Federal Skilled Worker Class (FSWC),

• The Federal Skilled Trades Class (FSTC), and

• The Canadian Experience Class (CEC).

A foreign national might need to apply using the paper-based process, or by the online process through Express Entry. As part of the process, the foreign national will have to pass a medical exam and get a police check (certificate). Everyone must have these checks, no matter where they plan to live in Canada.

To be nominated by a province or territory, the foreign national must follow the instructions as per the provincial selection procedures and policy.

If a foreign national is planning to study in Canada for a period of more than six months, the foreign national will require a study permit. A study permit is a document that gives permission to remain and study in Canada.

 

The foreign national will need a study permit to cover the entire duration of the studies and must comply with its conditions.

Applying for a Study Permit

A study permit application can be launched in the country of residence (provided the foreign national have been lawfully admitted in that country for a period of more than six months), or through the Visa Application Centre in Los Angeles, USA.

 

Depending on the foreign national citizenship, may be able to apply at a Canadian Port of Entry, and in some cases the foreign national may even apply from within Canada.
