In January 2015, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (formerly known as Citizenship and Immigration Canada) launched a new electronic system called Express Entry to manage applications for permanent residence in certain economic categories. According to the federal government, Canada needs high levels of immigration to meet current and future labor market needs, which will ensure our economic growth and long-term prosperity.

A study permit application can be launched in the country of residence (provided the foreign national have been lawfully admitted in that country for a period of more than six months), or through the Visa Application Centre in Los Angeles, USA. Depending on the foreign national citizenship, may be able to apply at a Canadian Port of Entry, and in some cases the foreign national may even apply from within Canada.

A Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) is a document that an employer in Canada may need to get before hiring a foreign worker. A positive LMIA will show that there is a need for a foreign worker to fill the job. It will also show that no Canadian worker is available to do the job. A positive LMIA is sometimes called a confirmation letter.

A temporary resident visa (TRV) is an official counterfoil document issued by a visa office that is placed in a person’s passport to show that they have met the requirements for admission to Canada as a temporary resident.

Canadian citizens and permanent residents may sponsor certain family members for permanent residence under the Family Class immigration. Your relatives can live, study and work in Canada if they become permanent residents of Canada. You can sponsor certain relatives to come to Canada if you’re at least 18 years old

Adults and some minors must have been physically present in Canada for at least 1095 days during the five years right before the date you sign your application.

Each province and territory (Except Quebec and Nunavut) has its own “streams” (immigration programs that target certain groups) and requirements. A foreign national might need to apply using the paper-based process, or by the online process through Express Entry. As part of the process, the foreign national will have to pass a medical exam and get a police check (certificate). Everyone must have these checks, no matter where they plan to live in Canada.

The Global Case Management System (GCMS) is Citizenship and Immigration Canada’s (CIC’s) single, integrated and worldwide system used internally to process applications for citizenship and immigration services.

With the parent and grandparent super visa, eligible parents and grandparents can visit family in Canada for up to two years without the need to renew their status. You can sponsor your own parents and grandparents, related by blood or adoption.
